How to be an amazing photographer

If you’re new to photography it can feel overwhelming wondering how to be an amazing photographer.

But being an amazing photographer doesn’t have to mean you’re the best photographer on the planet. It can also mean…

…you’re a good photographer who does amazing things!

This year I’ve decided I’m not going to think everything to bloody death! I bet that’s something you do, right?

I’m going to take a lot more action and do stuff that takes me out of my comfort zone.

For example…

Tomorrow I’m off to the local homeless shelter to help out.

I was invited to the shelter at a networking event 2 months ago and ever since I’ve been telling myself stuff like…

“I’m too busy.”

“If I’m going to be helpful should I pick something that relates better to my business like a children’s charity.”

“What would I be letting myself in for?”

“If I go will I be roped into going all the time?”

…and so it went on.

My stupid little ‘Lizard Brain’ was trying to protect me from harm and trying to keep me locked up in my house.

In the end I just emailed the guy and asked when he’d like me to pop down.

The email took 30 seconds to write and subsequently forced me into taking action.

It was like ripping off a plaster – ouch – done!

People will hire you because you’re the amazing photographer who’s doing a  fascinating project (like my ManKIND project) rather than the vanilla photographer who’s just like everyone else.

Portrait and wedding photography is all about meeting new people and experiencing life and capturing moments

If you’re tired of photography you’re tired of life.

If you’re tired (or scared) of life then you won’t make a great photographer.

I bet my heart will be racing when I walk into the homeless shelter tomorrow, but I bet I’ll be proud I did it.
